Independent Repair Shop - World Bagus

World Bagus Service Center
INDEPENDENT REPAIR SERVICE

Location: Indonesia
Work Duration: 4-5 Months
Relaunched in 2020

LONG STORY SHORT
World Bagus (WB), a small independent repair shop with a unique story, is nestled in the heart of Malang, East Java, Indonesia.

Its name, a homage to Warner Bros. (WB), carries a legacy that spans over two decades. In the early 2000s, World Bagus started on its journey as a movie rental shop, catering to the growing demand for home entertainment.

As time progressed, the business adapted to the changing landscape, transitioning into a mobile phone retailer known as World Bagus Cellular.

During the golden age of Nokia and Sony Ericsson, World Bagus became an early generation in the mobile phone market in Malang, selling these legendary brands. It was during this time that the shop's expertise in mobile device repair was born (2004).

Today, World Bagus stands as a testament to its resilience and adaptability, retaining its original name as a tribute to its roots and a reminder of its journey through the ever-evolving world of mobile technology.

TRIVIA #1
The name World Bagus isn't just a catchy phrase; it's a personal tribute. The shop's founder named it after his son, Bagus, meaning "good" in Indonesian. And with a touch of poetic license, the name "World Bagus" was born.

But the story goes even deeper. Bagus itself finds its roots in the ancient Sanskrit word "Tubagus," meaning powerful lord or strong master.

In Java, Indonesia, the name Tubagus is traditionally associated with royalty and high social status, reflecting the deep cultural significance of names and their ability to convey values, aspirations, and connections to one's ancestry.

This rich history behind a seemingly simple name reminds us that in this era of branding and marketing, it's easy to forget the stories that lie behind every business name. World Bagus' name is a powerful reminder that businesses are more than just products and services; they're also reflections of the people behind them.

TRIVIA #2
In the Indonesian market, the terms "Repair Service" and "Service Center" are more commonly used and understood than "Independent Repair Shop." This reflects the preference for using the word "Service" in the context of providing assistance or expertise.

Initially, English was the primary language used for branding and content. As a graphic designer and co-owner of this business (fun fact), I initially found it easier to create designs and content in English. This was primarily due to the abundance of English terminology in technology, which was more readily accessible and understandable to me.

However, a sense of guilt over neglecting my native language, Bahasa Indonesia, grew within me. I felt a responsibility to honor and promote my linguistic heritage. Consequently, I gradually transitioned towards using Indonesian as the dominant language in our branding and communication.

Throughout its journey, World Bagus has undergone several adjustments to its username and domain.

During the brand redesign process, I talked about the color palette with Bagus, the current owner. He mentioned his love for Arema FC, a local football club in Malang, whose name stands for "Arek Malang," meaning "people of Malang."

Bagus requested a color palette inspired by Arema FC's signature colors. While I understood his passion for the club,
I knew a direct translation of their vibrant hues wouldn't quite fit the tone of our independent repair service. Arema's old logo was a true icon of its time, packed with vibrant colors.

To bridge the gap, I implemented a mission to translate Arema FC's bold colors into a palette that resonated with our brand and the essence of electronics repair. The result was a blend of three main colors that captured the spirit of Arema FC while maintaining an approachable feel for our business.

When it comes to photography and videography, World Bagus keeps it real with a "whatever camera's available" approach. There's no fancy equipment or expensive setups, just a willingness to experiment and have fun.

Initially, World Bagus's style leaned towards a teal and orange color palette, but recently they've been embracing a more retro aesthetic, reminiscent of 90s cameras.

To grab readers' attention, World Bagus's content heavily relies (mostly) on eye-catching 3D designs and other creative elements. But don't let the fancy visuals fool you – the substance is just as impressive.

Each piece takes days to craft, involving meticulous research, multiple rounds of validation from various sources, and even feedback from World Bagus's own technician. This dedication ensures that the information presented is far from any form of information malpractice.

World Bagus understands that gadget troubles can cause stress and anxiety.
They want to ease your worries by letting you know it's okay to worry because it means you care.
